There's nothing quite like seeing a workplace in action to bring career possibilities to life!
That's exactly what happened when Horowhenua's Get-Go Work Ready Programme partnered with LT McGuinness and Architecture Plus to give local students an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at one of Horowhenua's leading construction businesses.
On Friday 31st July, Year 11-13 students from Waiopehu College and Horowhenua College visited the LT McGuinness site on Enterprise Drive in Levin. The visit was designed to spark curiosity, showcase the wide range of careers available in construction, and help students understand how they could begin their own journey into the industry.
Throughout the morning, students explored the site, learning about everything from design and construction through to specialised machinery, tools and technology. They saw first-hand how projects come together and were encouraged to ask questions about the work, the equipment and the people behind it all. Their curiosity was evident as they asked what it was like to work at LT McGuinness, how different tools were used, and how the design software and roll-forming machine operated.
One of the most valuable messages students took away was that careers rarely follow a straight line. Members of the LT McGuinness team shared their own stories, explaining how different experiences and opportunities had led them to their current roles. It was a powerful reminder that students don't need to have their entire future mapped out while they're still at school - taking the first step and gaining experience is what really matters.
Students were also inspired by apprentice Laura Torres-Rowe, who recently received the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Apprentice Excellence Award. Laura shared how she started as a contract labourer before her strong work ethic earned her a full-time apprenticeship with LT McGuinness. Her story demonstrated that commitment, determination and a willingness to learn can open doors to exciting opportunities.
Adding another perspective was Kirsty Chamberlain from Architecture Plus, who spoke about her own career in the construction industry. Kirsty will continue supporting students by visiting local colleges to talk with those interested in architecture and construction - or simply curious about where those careers could lead.
Experiences like these are at the heart of Get-Go. By connecting students with local employers and real workplaces, the programme helps young people explore career options, build confidence and see the opportunities that exist right here in Horowhenua. It's about inspiring students to ask questions, make connections and begin imagining their future.
